Brady v Belichick | The fascinating dynamic that threatens the Patriots

The fascinating power dynamic between Tom Brady and Bill Belichick could disrupt the New England Patriots for the next seasons, according to Boston Globe writer Tara Sullivan.

Tara joined Off The Ball to discuss the situation at the Patriots, as the veteran quarterback looks increasingly likely to leave the franchise, while the legendary coach appears unmoved on the issue.

"There have been many reports over the last couple of years, hitting a crescendo about two years ago, that there was a lot of rancour between the big three of Tom Brady, Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft," said Sullivan.

"If you look back, they had drafted a quarterback behind Brady a few years ago in Jimmy Garoppolo - who is now starting for the top seed in the NFC in the San Francisco 49ers.

"That still does not sit well with Bill Belichick, as he thought he had his next guy and he was forced to get rid of him because they were sticking with Brady.

"It is impossible to argue with the result as they have won two Super Bowls since, but it does leave the Patriots in this place where they are stuck with him for another year.

"That relationship between [Brady and Belichick] is the most fascinating and the most difficult to interpret, because every time Bill says good things [about Brady], he makes sure to say that negotiations are not a one-way street.

"He always seems to have a counter-balance when it comes to saying how good Brady is at football, because he has to also make a lot of the personnel decisions."

Brady v Belichick: family at war?

As for where Brady might end up, Sullivan believes that the dynamic between coach and player comes into play once again.

"I think that there is a small element between [Brady] and Belichick; there has always been this discussion over who has been more responsible for the success.

"Maybe there is an element where Brady thinks 'I can go and prove that I am the reason for all the success."
