Midfield goal machine Alex Kavanagh has today been named the Só Hotels Women’s National League Player of the Month for March.
The Shelbourne attacking midfielder is the first player to pick up the award for the 2019 season which kicked off on March 9.
19-year-old Kavanagh has made an impressive start to the campaign with Shels who are in third place after five matches and just five points behind table-toppers Peamount United and Wexford Youths just above them in second place.
The Finglas-native spoke of how winning the award was great recognition for working her way into the Shels first team this season.
“It means a lot to me, even more so because last season I didn’t play as much as I wanted to, so in pre-season I had to work a lot harder to get into the team.”
Five goals in three for Alex Kavanagh
Kavanagh has been prolific in front of goal this season, scoring a total of five goals in March, and credits this with helping her pick up the award.
“A big part of it [winning the award], I think, is the goals," she added. "But I don’t think I would have been able to score the goals without the girls. I have been working hard, because of last season, as I said, but I’ve also been working on scoring goals.”
Shels have been working hard on playing good football under manager Dave Bell this season, and it’s showing on the pitch.
“I think Dave coming in, I think he’s that kind of manager, he likes to play football, not just hit it long. So, in training, he works on that a lot.
"I think we can still do a lot more, we can work a lot more, we know as a team, we want to improve and keep improving,” added Kavanagh.
The Reds are back in action on Sunday May 5 when they travel away to play Cork City who are just a point behind them in the table.
