Aiden McGeady in deadline day move to Charlton

Republic of Ireland international Aiden McGeady has signed a deal to join Charlton Athletic until the end of the season.

The 33-year-old joins the Championship club on loan from Sunderland, who are currently fifth in League One.

The Addicks are just outside the relegation zone in 21st, four points clear of Wigan in 22nd.

McGeady will bring a wealth of experience to The Valley, having earned 95 international caps with the Republic of Ireland as well as playing club football in England, Scotland and Russia.

The winger has played with both Celtic and Everton, amongst others, as well as a stint with Spartak Moscow.

The signing of McGeady has particularly pleased Charlton boss Lee Bowyer.

“Bringing in someone with his quality is going to add to the squad," Bowyer told the official club website.

"Last season we played against them obviously on three occasions and he’s an exceptional player. He brings goals, he brings assists, he’s someone that can make something out of nothing."

“He’s got experience, he’s played in Europe and for his country. We’re bringing in a very good, experienced player. Coming into the back end of the season experience can be important, Darren Pratley showed that in the play-off games last season.”

Director of Football at Charlton Steve Gallen added: “I’m pleased. He’s someone I’ve been following personally for years watching him play for Ireland and Celtic in particular. We had a good look at him last year because we played against him a few times. We wanted to get someone attacking and someone exciting and I’m pleased we got Aiden."

McGeady could make his first appearance for the club this weekend. He will train with his new teammates today [Friday] and is set to be available for selection for their clash at home to Barnsley on Saturday.
