Where are they now: The Real Madrid side that bridged a 32 year gap

It's pretty hard to imagine but European Cup/Champions League glory eluded Real Madrid for more than 30 years.

The winners of the first five European Cups would add a sixth in 1966 but for 32 years, the club which can lay claim to being the biggest in the world had to wait and wait to bring the trophy back home.

That day finally came in 1998 when they beat Juventus in the Champions League final thanks to a goal by Serbian striker Predrag Mijatovic.

Since then, the club have won further Champions League titles in 2000, 2002, 2014 and 2016 and this Saturday, Juventus are their opponents once again as they look to win Europe's most illustrious club competition for a 12th time.

But who were the members of the Real Madrid starting XI in the Amsterdam Arena back on May 20th 1998 and what has become of them?

Bodo Illgner

The former Germany No 1 helped his country to World Cup glory in 1990. After spending his entire career at FC Koln until 1996, he then made the switch to Real Madrid, where he would remain until 2001.

The 50 year old has been a pundit for Sky Deutschland.

Christian Panucci

The former Italy right back played for many of his country and Europe's biggest clubs as well as a short loan spell at Chelsea.

Coaching has been his calling since retiring seven years ago, assisting his former Real Madrid, Roma and Milan boss Fabio Capello when the ex-England manager was in charge of Russia.

Since then he has had stints at Livorno and Ternana.

Fernando Hierro

A club legend at Real Madrid and as a Spain international, having gone on to captain the side, the goalscoring defender and set piece specialist spent 14 years at the Santiago Bernabeu between 1989 and 2003.

The 1998 Champions League triumph was the first of three during his time at the club.

These days he is manager of Real Oviedo, although he previously coached at Real during Carlo Ancelotti's time in charge.

Manuel Sanchis

A native of Madrid, product of the Real academy and captain on the night in 1998, the sweeper had the honour of lifting their first European Cup in over three decades, following on in the footsteps of his father who was part of the 1966 team.

He retired as a one club man in 2001, capping more than 20 years at Real. He has gone on to contribute to Spanish TV station TVE.

Roberto Carlos

At one time, the Brazilian World Cup winner was the best left back in the world and was a key part of the Galacticos era.

A couple of years ago he took on the head coach reins at Delhi Dynamos in the Indian Super League but departed in December 2015. He now wants to take his coaching career to Australia.

He did a sit down interview with Simplemente Futbol back in 2014.

Christian Karembeu

The 1998 World Cup winning French midfielder retired 11 years ago and four years ago, he went on to become Strategic Advisor to the Administration at Greek giants Olympiacos.

The former Middlesbrough player was part of the ITV punditry team at Euro 2016.

Predrag Mijatovic

The man who scored the winner for Real Madrid in the 1998 final left the club in 1999 for Fiorentina in Italy and finished his career at Levante.

He later returned to Real as sporting director between 2006 and 2009.

Raul

A product of the academy and the Spanish attacking star of the team, Raul finally departed in 2010 for two years in Germany, followed by a brief spell in the Middle East.

He then played in the US for the rebooted New York Cosmos franchise and retired in 2015.

On July 1st, Raul will become adviser to Real club president Florentino Perez.
