Wexford will not appeal Davy Fitzgerald's ban

The Wexford county board have confirmed they will not appeal Davy Fitzgerald's eight week sideline ban.

The Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) handed down the suspension after he entered the field and confronted referee Diarmuid Kirwan during his side's Allianz Hurling League semi-final defeat to Tipperary.

In a statement the county board described the ban as harsh, but have opted against appealing the decision "in the broader interests of the game and of the senior hurling team".

He will now not be allowed on the sideline for his side's Championship opener against a round robin qualifier, and a potential semi-final with Kilkenny.

Meanwhile, Tipperary manager Michael Ryan says Jason Forde did nothing to warrant a two-game suspension for his part in the incident.

Forde clashed with Fitzgerald as the Wexford boss was leaving the field.

The ban was proposed by the CCCC after video footage was reviewed, but the Tipperary county board are understood to have requested a date with the Central Hearings Committee on the issue.

If the ban stands, Forde will miss his side's championship opener against Cork next month and the resulting Munster semi-final or All-Ireland qualifier.

Speaking after yesterday's defeat to Galway in the league final, Ryan confirmed they will do everything to defend the player.

"It's an incident that did happen and shouldn't have happened," he said. "The GAA are trying to deal with it the way they feel they should.

"We have to go defend our man. He did nothing, as far as I'm concerned, to warrant the accusation or the punishment."
