'We kept them in the game'- Andy Friend continues search for perfection despite victory

Andy Friend bemoaned his side's lack of cutting edge despite a 12-point win in their opening Challenge Cup clash with Bordeaux this afternoon.

Connacht ran out 22-10 winners in front of a packed Sportsground, but insisted his side needed to do more to nullify their French counterparts.

"I didn't think we took our chances," he said. "We talked about it before the game. You've got a touring French team, you can put them to the sword and absolutely ruin their day or you can keep them in the game.

"We had opportunities to put them to the sword and we didn't take them. We kept them in the game and fair play to them, they stayed in the game.

"We had to hang on right to the death. Our attack isn't what it needed to be and our discipline continues to be a theme.

"We need to be better than that."

Friend did acknowledge the result saying that he could find positives in the performance.

"We get four points, we'll take the four points. There's a lot of error out there and some areas where we're not as happy as we should be.

"I thought our line-out worked very, very well. That continues to be a strength of ours and some of our defensive efforts were outstanding.

"The other big plus is that we had three debutants out there, straight out of the academy. It's a big occasion for them."
