Wayne Rooney's career may go full circle this summer, with reports he is to return to Everton.
The Manchester United and England captain's role at Old Trafford is becoming increasingly marginalised under Jose Mourinho. This season, the Liverpool native has played 29 times, scoring five goals.
Rooney is currently out of action with a knee injury. This season, he has spent plenty of time on the sidelines were recurrent knee and thigh issues. He was left out of England's squad for the international window.
According to The Independent, United may even be prepared to let Rooney leave on a free transfer this summer. In 2004, an 18-year-old Rooney moved to Old Trafford, from Everton for £25.6 million. He has gone on to become the club's record goalscorer, finding the net on 250 occasions.
Rooney scored 15 goals in his first spell for the club, before sealing the move to Manchester United. In his two seasons in the first team, he played almost 70 times for the club, and became the Premier League's youngest ever goalscorer, when he lobbed David Seaman. Rooney was still five days short of his 17th birthday.
West Ham United have also been reportedly interested in Rooney, but the lifelong Everton fan is even prepared to take a large pay cut to return to Goodison Park. At Manchester United, the 31-year-old is earning over £250,000 per week. Everton are reportedly willing to offer him £150,000 weekly.
Earlier this year, the England captain was heavily linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, but he intends to try and continue his England career for as long as possible.
