Wayne Rooney may consider leaving Manchester United, unless he is afforded more game time, according to United legend Paul Scholes.
The captain has not been in the starting 11 for a Premier League game since December, and has largely fallen out of favour with manager Jose Mourinho, due to the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Rooney equaled and exceeded Sir Bobby Charlton's goal-scoring record for United earlier this season, scoring his 250th goal in stoppage time against Stoke last month. However, that was just his fifth club goal across all competitions so far this season due to a lack of pitch time.
United resume their Europa League campaign tonight, with a home-tie against Saint-Étienne. Rooney is unavailable for selection due to injury and former teammate Paul Scholes says that unless the situation improves for Rooney, it's possible that the 31-year-old may choose to leave the club.
Commenting on the frustration of being benched, Scholes told the Daily Mail:
"No one will be more frustrated than Wayne at not playing. Being a sub will be driving him up the wall. When he gets his chance he has to take it because he has real competition."
"It will be killing him just coming in for the Europa League or the FA Cup. But it's up to him to get his head down and prove he can play in the big games."
Rooney has two years remaining on his current contract with United, but Scholes suspects that Rooney may decide not to see that deal through.
"If it carries on going the way it is, I can't. Maybe it will be re-assessed at the end of the season if he's in and out of the team. I don't see him as a player who will accept that. He will want to be at a team where he's playing every week."
