Liverpool hosted Burnley in yesterday's only Premier League match with the home side nicking it 2-1.
After the game, Ireland and Burnley defender Stephen Ward shared his thoughts on the action at Anfield.
“Obviously taking the lead it was really disappointing to concede on the stroke of halftime and that probably gave them a bit of momentum going into the second half,” he said.
“It’s another positive performance away from home but the lads are bitterly disappointed not to come away with something which we felt we deserved," he said.
The huge turning point in the game was Liverpool’s goal just before halftime. Although it was a huge blow for Burnley, Ward felt his side were still well in the game.
“We were very angry at ourselves for letting them back in the game so close to halftime. We could have defended better which is disappointing. I felt we kicked on and we were right in it. I thought it was a very even game and that we definitely deserved something from it."
Away from home Burnley have lost four out of their last five games by a single goal and although they aren’t picking up points on the road, the Irish international is confident that they can turn these positive performances into points.
Ward said: “I think it shows how far we’ve come that we can come to places like Anfield and the Emirates and perform the way that we are performing. If you look out there today you can see a Burnley team that’s fighting and believes they can stay in this league.”
Earlier today Republic of Ireland manager Martin O'Neill named a 39-man squad for Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Wales and the friendly against Iceland.
Ireland sit top of group D on 10 points and four above Wales.
Speaking ahead of the international period, the Burnley defender was excited for the upcoming matches, saying: “We’ve one more big game in the Premier League and then we will look forward to a massive qualifier. It’s always a welcome break away from the trials and tribulations of club level.”
Irish Midfielder Jeff Hendrick is coming into some form as he impressed at Anfield yesterday. Ward feels he has gone from “strength to strength” and that his presence is hugely appreciated within the team, for both club and country.
Ireland will face Wales on Friday March 24 at the Aviva Stadium.
