Home favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has suffered a shock first-round exit in the French Open this afternoon.
The 12th seed was beaten in four sets by world number 91 Renzo Olivo, 7-5 6-4 6-7(6) 6-4, enduring his worst performance at the competition since 2005.
Tsonga was forced to save three match points before folding to the Argentine, with the game carrying over from their clash on Tuesday evening.
The news is all the more surprising due to the fact that the 32-year-old came off the back of his victory at the Lyon Open, another clay competition less than a week ago.
Olivo now faces British number two Kyle Edmund next.
Meanhwile, Petra Kvitova's speedy comeback to tennis after her hand was stabbed in December has been stopped in the second round.
The two-time Wimbledon champion was beaten in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5), by Bethanie Mattek-Sands.
There was less trouble for Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki, who didn't drop a game as she beat Canadian Françoise Abanda 6-0 6-0.
Elsewhere, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic breezed through their respective matches once again in straight sets. It took Djokovic just over two hours to ease past Portugal’s Joao Sousa. The Serb won the match 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 in a comfortable victory.
Nadal won his match by an identical scoreline but finished in under two hours and managed to not drop a single service game, beating Dutch veteran Robin Haase. Both players will continue their push for the title when they play their third round matches on Friday. Nadal will face the Georgian player Nikoloz Basilashvili while Djokovic will face a much trickier opponent in Diego Schwartzman.
