Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams says Arsene Wenger might have done better in recent seasons if he'd been more willing to accept help.
The ex-defender says he'd have liked the chance to coach the first team at the club. This week, Wenger signed a new two-year contract extension which will keep him at the club - despite plenty of speculation and fan protests.
Adams explained his view was confirmed when working with the club's youth sides.
"There's a tinge of sadness that [the chance to coach] hasn't happened," he told Sky Sports. "It was made very clear to me when I joined Arsenal last summer that there was no real route through to the reserves and through to the first team.
"The academy director at the time told me that there was no route. This was it."
The Granada manager said that he can understand the fans' frustration and admits he doesn't see the club heading in the right direction in the coming years.
"I don't see a legacy," he admitted.
"As a man who worked for him for six years and who has had a distant relationship with him over the last 14 years, I personally think he's the most successful Arsenal manager of all time.
"I don't want to see that spoiled. I see in parts of Arsene that he's incredibly addicted to football and I don't see that he's got a life outside of it. I don't want this to go on too long and crumble in front of him - for it to all end in tears."
