Robert Karlsson named as Ryder Cup 2018 vice-captain

European Ryder Cup golf captain Thomas Bjorn has named his first vice-captain for the 2018 event in Paris.

Sweden's Robert Karlsson will be helping the Dane as they try to win back the trophy from the United States. Karlsson featured for Europe in the 2006 and 2008 editions of the Ryder Cup.

"I have the experience of what the players will face and also have a lot of experience on the European Tour," said the former European number one.

"I know the players well and I know Thomas very well too. When he gave me the call I was super pumped about it."

Of his selection, Bjorn said: "I know from all the Ryder Cups I have been involved in, both as a player and vice-captain, is it vital to have people around that you trust implicitly and Robert most definitely fits into that category.

"He has been one of my closest friends on Tour for many years and, not only that, he is immensely respected by all the players, both his peers and the younger guys now emerging."

Next year's event takes place at Le Golf National in Paris from 28-30 September.

The US head into the tournament on the back of a convincing 17-11 victory over Europe at Hazeltine last year.
