The 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be the most expensive ever.
12 stadia will host matches between November 21st and December 18th. Of those 12 stadia, nine of them are being built from scratch, with the other three being redeveloped.
There is less than 140 kilometres from Qatar's most-northerly venue in Madinat ash Shamal to Al Wakrah in the south, yet the majority of funds being spent by tournament organisers or infrastructure.
"We are spending close to $500 million per week on capital projects," Qatar's Finance Minister Ali Shareef Al-Emadi revealed on Tuesday, according to AFP.
"And this will carry on for the next three to four years to achieve our goal and objective of really getting the country ready for 2022."
"Ninety per cent of the 2022 contracts have already been awarded," Minister Emadi added.
"That doesn't mean the stadiums only, we are talking about highways, rail, ports, airports, those are really underway, even hospitals and everything."
Despite the heavy funds being put into tournament preparation, Emadi added said he felt the tournament would not be as expensive as previous tournaments.
"We are putting $200 billion in terms of infrastructure... If you look at stand alone, the World Cup, no it is not."
Qatar's first major hosting of a tournament will come in 2021, when the country hosts the Confederations Cup.
