Phil Jagielka's sure Everton fans would love to welcome Rooney back

Everton captain Phil Jagielka believes the Merseyside club's fans would "love" to see Wayne Rooney make a return to Goodison Park.

England's record goalscorer has found it difficult to get in Manchester United's starting line-up this season, leading to speculation he could leave this summer.

Goodison Park has been mentioned as a possible destination if he does depart Old Trafford.

Jagielka told Sky Sports News that Rooney's adoration for his boyhood club is clear but that he remains the dark about his former England team-mate's intentions.

"He's made no secret that he obviously is still a massive Everton fan but I'm not going to try and second guess what he's going to do," said Jagielka.

"I'm sure the fans would love to see him back but only if it's obviously on the right terms and if he's going to contribute heavily towards next season."

Most recently, Rooney has stated that he hopes to fight for his place at Man United, who he joined from Everton in the summer of 2004, shortly after that year's European Championships when he burst into the global consciousness of football fans.

"Would I like to stay? I've been at this club for 13 years. Of course, I want to play football," he said at a recent press conference.
