Petra Kvitova makes emotional return to Tennis five months after stabbing attack

Two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova made an emotional return to the sport today, winning her first match since being stabbed during a burglary in December.

The attack at her home left her with career-threatening injuries and had surgery on her racket-holding hand.

But despite the trauma she suffered, the 27-year-old progressed to round two of the French Open, after defeating Julia Boserup 6-3 6-2.

She was initially expected to make a comeback in Wimbledon, but her recovery was quicker than expected and she first began training earlier this month.

Speaking after her win in Paris, Kvitova said: "It's a pleasure to be here and I'm happy I made the decision to play."

She also paid tribute to her parents, who were in stands for her match, which she won in just 74 minutes:

"Thank you for everything, you helped me through this difficult time. I'm glad with how I played. There are a few things to improve but what can I expect after such a long time."
