O'Donovan brothers miss out on medal at Rowing World Cup

Paul and Gary O'Donovan narrowly missed out on a medal finish at the World Cup rowing event in Belgrade.

The Rio stars came in fourth in the lightweight men's double sculls final, coming in less than a second behind the third-placed Polish team in a time of 6:27.120.

After winning their semi-final race yesterday, the O'Donovans were unable to add to that achievement in a competitive final today.

Meanwhile, Mark O'Donovan and Shane O'Driscoll won a gold medal, while Denise Walsh took silver in their respective races at the regatta.

O'Donovan and O'Driscoll edged out Russia and 2015 World Champions Great Britain on the way to their gold medals in the lightweight men's pair.

The pair told the Irish Examiner that they felt 'good during the race,' while Walsh said that she focused her energies on her sprint.

"I didn't realise how close everyone was to me, especially Patricia (Merz, Switzerland)," she told the Irish Examiner.

Sanita Puspure is also in action for Ireland today, and her women's single sculls final takes place at 12.33pm Irish time.
