Nigel Owens names epic Ellis Park test in 2013 as his favourite game

Nigel Owens has been one of the top referrees in the rugby world for the last decade.

As he approached the landmark of taking charge of his 150th Celtic League/PRO12 Championship match this weekend, he opened up about his career thus far.

Owens' style of referring has led to some of the most exciting games of rugby in recent years. He highlighted two international games in 2013 as the most enjoyable he has been involved in so far in his career as the man in the middle.

The Welshman took charge of a Rugby Championship game between South Africa and New Zealand in Ellis Park, Johannesburg. The home side needed a bonus point win to claim the title while the All Blacks required only a losing bonus point to wrap up the tournament.

What followed was an end-to-end match which highlighted running rugby at its finest. New Zealand won the match 38-27.

Speaking to WalesOnline the celebrated referee said of the match: "That's what convinced me the bonus point system can make a difference…though it didn't really do that in the Six Nations this year," he said.

Owens was also present when Ireland charged into an early lead against the All Blacks in 2013 only to lose to a dramatic last minute conversion.

"Four weeks after that I reffed Ireland v New Zealand in Dublin which was the second best," he added.
