My future is up in the air - Joey Carbery

Joey Carbery believes that his positional future is up in the air, as he finds himself between numbers ten and fifteen in Joe Schmidt's Ireland squad. He joined Eoin and Ger on the line on OTB:AM.

Carbery replaced Johnny Sexton in the latter stages of the game against Wales, and insists that he is enjoying the experience with the squad. He gave us an insight into the training camp.

"Joe would normally say what positions you are covering, so during the week you can get a few rests under your belt for certain positions. Just really knowing your role for whatever position it may be, and being pretty certain with it earlier on in the week can help you mentally get ready for it as well. It is tough, but the coaches have us well prepared.

In terms of his positional future, Joey is staying zen about the situation he finds himself in.

"If I’m on the pitch, I’m happy to be playing. It really just depends, in a few years time, where I am. But at the moment I’m getting myself ready to play both ten and fifteen – I suppose they do complement each other. They do make me a better rugby player rather than just a better ten... it is developing my whole range and skill set at the moment.

"When you’re playing at fifteen, and you are trying to read the ten’s body language - you can get hints about what he might do. Then at fifteen you also know what is very tough to defend. When I’m back playing at ten, I know from experience that trying to get out of the left-hand corner will be a lot tougher than the right, so it is stuff like that that gives you insight and can help you to know what the other players are thinking."
