Liverpool FC reveal a Dejan Lovren refugee documentary

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is best known on the international stage for his role with Croatia. The 27-year-old has played over 30-times, including at the 2014 World Cup for the country.

Despite being best known for his Croatian performances, Lovren was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, when it was part of the former Yugoslavia. The son of Croatian-born parents, the defender was one of the millions who were displaced as a result of the Bosnian War.

Eventually settling in Germany, the Lovren family moved to Croatia years after the war ended.

Liverpool FC, through their LFCTV channel have announced they are to release a documentary about the defender's time as a refugee. Due to be broadcast on Wednesday night, February 8th, the programme will look at Lovren's traumatic childhood.

"I wish I could explain everything what happened", Lovren explains. "You hear so many stories, but nobody knows the real truth. It just happened. It just changed everything through the night - war between everyone, between three different cultures. People just changed - we heard so many stories on the radio and the television."

"I just remember when the sirens went on. I was so scared because I was thinking ‘bombs’ or that something will happen now. I remember my mum took me and we went to the basement, I don’t know how long we’d been sitting there, I think it was until the sirens went off. Afterwards, I remember mum, my uncle, my uncle’s wife, we took the car and then we were driving to Germany."
