Kaymer and Spieth tied in TPC battle

Martin Kaymer and Jordan Spieth are tied for the lead at The Players Championship at Sawgrass. The pair are at 12 under in the race to take the tournament known by some as “the fifth major”. Sergio Garcia and Australian John Senden are three shots further back.

Spieth has been in remarkably consistent form this weekend and hasn’t yet dropped a single shot through 54 holes. Yesterday the 20 year old American scored a one under 71 to move level with Kaymer. The German missed a par putt on the 18th and shot 72.

Rory McIlroy continued the resurgence of Friday’s back nine – when he had to battle to just make the cut – with a 3 under 69 yesterday. He struggled on the front nine but once again made amends on the way back in, this time with 5 birdies.

"If I had just kept it around even par for the front nine, I'd be up near the leaders," McIlroy said after yesterday’s round.

"I'm really happy with how I've been able to come back the last couple of days, but it's also a little frustrating that I've had to come back because I feel like I'm playing good enough to not have these little stretches of bad holes,” McIlroy added.

Graeme McDowell shot a very disappointing 77 yesterday to drop to 1 over.

Meanwhile, play is underway in the badly weather delayed Madeira Islands Open. The Open has been reduced to 36 holes due to persistent heavy fog over the weekend.

Irishmen David Higgins, Pater Lawrie and Dara Ford are still part of the field. Higgins sits on level par through 10 holes today, with Ford on 1 over par and Lawrie on 4 over.

There's a 3-way tie for the lead between Jose-Filipe Lima, Daniel Brooks and Scott Henry, who all sit on 6 under par.
