Jose Mourinho hits out at Rostov pitch

Jose Mourinho has slammed the quality of Rostov FC's pitch, ahead of their Europa League clash this Thursday.

The Russian side play their games at the Olimp-2 Stadium, a football ground which has a capacity of 15,840. Rostov manager Ivan Daniliants previously cautioned that the Premier League side 'will be surprised' when they arrive.

And it seems as though his prediction was correct, based on Mourinho's assessment of the pitch.

The United manager told Sky Sports:

"It's still hard for me to believe that we are going to play. I know that we have to, but it is hard for me to believe we are going to play on that field - if you can call it a field."

"And I don't know what team to play, really. I don't know if Henrikh Mkhitaryan is going to play, I don't know.

"I have now a lot to think, because I was expecting something more playable."

Mourinho previously criticised the standard of pitches during the season.

In December, he criticised UEFA for staging their Europa League group stage game against Zorya Luhansk on an icy pitch.

He also spoke out about the quality of a pitch in Beijing that was intended to host an International Champions Cup game between United and Manchester City last July. The game was subsequently cancelled due to flooding.

Mourinho said he spotted similarities between that pitch and the one they are about to play on in Russia.

"In a very similar pitch in the summer in China, we and Manchester City decided not to play. But it looks like we have to play."
