Irish prop to start against the Lions on Saturday

An Irish prop has been confirmed to play against the Lions this Saturday.

The New Zealand Provincial Barbarians named their team on Wednesday, hours after the Lions confirmed their opening matchday squad which includes three Irish players in the starting XV.

Canterbury prop Oliver Jager has been handed the number 3 jersey for the game in Whangarei, and could pack down against Tadhg Furlong. The 21-year-old moved to New Zealand in 2013.

Jager played for Blackrock College as a back-row forward, but moved up to the front row when he moved to New Zealand. The former Ireland schools player is now qualified by residency to play for New Zealand.

Having moved through Canterbury's ranks, he made his Super Rugby debut earlier this year. Jager could also play a second time against the Lions later this month when they play the Crusaders.

North Harbour's Bryn Gatland has been named at fly-half for the match. The 22-year-old is the son of Lions coach Warren Gatland.

Saturday's game kicks off at 8.35am, in the first of ten matches over the next five weeks, that includes three Tests against New Zealand.
