Ireland's Sam Bennett wins stage three of the Paris-Nice race

Sam Bennett has won stage three of the Paris-Nice race.

The Irish cyclist, racing with German team Bora-Hansgrohe, beat Marcel Kittel and John Degenkolb among others in a sprint into Chalon-sur-Saone to claim victory this afternoon.

The result makes this the most significant victory of his career and he becomes the first Irishman in 28 years to win a stage of the race - since Stephen Roche in 1989.

The last Irishman to win the race was Sean Kelly back in 1988.

The 26-year-old sits in 23rd position in general classification after his victory in the 190km stage from Chablis to Chalon-sur-Saone.

Meanwhile, Ireland's Dan Martin remains ninth on general classification, 23 seconds off leader Arnaud Demare.
