The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) is seeking assurances that the United States' controversial new immigration policy will not affect the 2021 World Championships.
Donald Trump's executive order which has banned entry to the US from seven mainly Muslim countries and all refugees has been heavily criticised since it was announced on Friday.
Eugene in Oregon is due to host the World Championships in 2021, and the IAAF want clarity on what Trump's divisive stance means for the games.
The IAAF said they were "seeking assurances" in a statement published by The Guardian.
The seven countries which are the subject of Trump's executive order for a period of 90 days are: Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
Among the critics of the move are Britain's four time Olympic gold medal distance runner Mo Farah.
The 33 year old was born in the capital of Somalia, Mogadishu, before moving to the UK aged eight.
In a Facebook post, he compared the treatment he received in Britain in recent weeks when he was awarded with a Knighthood, compared to being made "an alien" by Trump, saying: "Me and many others like me are being told that we may not be welcome. It’s deeply troubling that I will have to tell my children that Daddy might not be able to come home - to explain why the President has introduced a policy that comes from a place of ignorance and prejudice."
"My story is an example of what can happen when you follow polices of compassion and understanding, not hate and isolation."
The status of Los Angeles' bid to host the 2024 Olympics has also come under scrutiny since Trump's executive order was announced.
