Hibs and Hearts' relegations are a blow for the SPL

For the first time since the Scottish top flight came into being 125 years ago, Edinburgh will not have a single representative in the top division.

Hearts' relegation had been confirmed some time ago and Hibernian succumbed following a penalty shootout in the relegation playoff.

Our Monday night football pundit, Hibs fan and former Scotland international Pat Nevin is under no illusion about the effect Edinburgh's absence will have on an already-weakened SPL.

"It's hell on earth but deserved. They weren't good enough," said Pat.

"There's going to be a massive drop in the numbers going to watch the games. You've also got to look at Celtic fans. Are they really go out in massive numbers to watch their team hammering everybody else week after week? Certainly numbers have gone down for Celtic fans. Everybody is saying it now, the league below [the SPL] is going to be the better league. It's a real blow to the SPFL and a real blow to the finances of that organization."

Pat also discussed goings on at his old club Chelsea where David Luiz will decamp for PSG.

"In the Nevin household there are tears," joked Pat. "I'm a fan of the man. I think he's a great player. I do think his best position was centre-midfield or deep-lying midfield. The times he was there, he was quite often very good. But Mourinho will get somebody in who's more dependable and Chelsea will become an incredibly hard team to break down."

Pat also revealed that Luiz was a centre-forward at the very beginning of his career.
