Garry Monk resigns as Leeds United manager

Garry Monk was resigned as manager of Leeds United.

The former Swansea City manager spent one season at the club, before his resignation was announced on Thursday afternoon. He guided the team to a seventh place finish, missing on on the Play-Offs by five points.

Monk signed a one-year rolling deal last summer with the Elland Road club, but announced he is to step away from the club.

In a statement released by Leeds United the club revealed the reluctantly agreed to Monk's resignation despite saying earlier this week, they wished to renew his one-year deal.

"We are shocked and disappointed by Garry’s decision but his resignation has been reluctantly accepted by Chairman Andrea Radrizzani."

"Andrea made it clear to the media yesterday that his intention was to exercise the Club's option to extended the Manager's contract for another 12 months and immediately begin negotiations for a longer term deal."

"Mr Radrizzani has met with Garry twice since taking over at Elland Road earlier this week and during the second meeting yesterday it became clear that Garry was considering life beyond Leeds United as at no time did Garry wish to discuss terms for a longer contract."

The news of Monk's resignation comes days after Radrizzani was confirmed as the new owner of the club, after completing his takeover earlier this week, replacing Massimo Cellino.

In the statement the club said they were "deeply saddened" by Monks departure, before adding "there is no individual bigger than our Club."

Monk's resignation comes with two managerial vacancies currently in the Premier League. Both Crystal Palace and Watford are currently without a manager ahead of the 2017-18 season.
