Frankie Edgar says the UFC interim titles are "silly"

Conor McGregor has created an 'interim' problem for the UFC.

Since the Dubliner defeated Chad Mendes at UFC 189 in July 2015 for the UFC Interim Featherweight Title, there has been a further two men to hold that interim belt. At one point, Jose Aldo called the idea of an interim title as a "toy belt".

Max Holloway is the current Interim Featherweight Champion and is the only 'interim champion' in the company. Away from the featherweight division there have been ten interim champions in the history of the UFC.

One person who is unhappy with the situation of the featherweight division is Frankie Edgar. The former Lightweight Champion is currently out injured, but has been at the top of the featherweight rankings in recent years.

Speaking to The MMA Hour on Monday, Edgar said he was unsure why the UFC have become so eager to introduce interim titles, especially in Conor McGregor's weight divisions.

"I just think they’re getting silly with these interim titles," Edgar said. “It’s a little too much. They’re already taking Conor’s [lightweight] one away. I just don’t get it."

Next month, Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov fight for the UFC Interim Lightweight Title at UFC 209, despite McGregor winning the title in November. Even without his extended break, McGregor would not have fought until March at the earliest.
