Fergus Slattery on the Lions: "I think the 10 match tour is semi-insane"

Lions legend Fergus Slattery beleives the schedule for the 2017 Lions Tour is "insane".

He was part of the much-celebrated squads which won back-to-back tours in New Zealand and South Africa in the 1970s.

Slattery took part in Off the Ball's 'Lions Legend's" night in the RDS last week and reflected on the best moments from his career.

Speaking to Nathan Murphy at the event, he said: "Winning two Lions tours in New Zealand in '71 and South Africa '74, there's lots of moments. You know, to win as in '74, to win three of the four tests and draw unfortunately the fourth one, they were all great moments, each and every one of them.

"Thankfully, there are lots of moments, that's the great thing about it. And the same thing in New Zealand, it was a lot more problematic. Won the first test, lost the second one, won the third one and drew the fourth one. And thankfully, it was a JPR (Williams) drop-goal that secured us that fourth test. So, they're all great, great moments.

"We were away for three and three and a half months - that's the reason I stopped playing for the Lions because I couldn't afford it. You've got a job, you've got to work, you've got to get yourself going in this world. So, I was very happy that I'd been fortunate to be on two winning Lions Tours so the challenge for all these guys is huge.

"I think the (current) 10 match tour is semi-insane because, with the exception of the first game, they're playing all sides which potentially in theory can beat the Lions.

"And to be under that sort of pressure twice a week, every week bar the last week...I think that's a mistake. I just don't think it's the right thing for the Lions to be doing," he added.
