Sunderland manager David Moyes admits his side "agreed" to put the ball out of play so that John Terry could receive his guard of honour.
Terry, who was playing his final Premier League game for Chelsea, exited the game in the 26th minute to applause from his teammates.
Speaking after today's 5-1 defeat to the Premier League champions, the Scot said that his side were on board with the planned celebration.
"I think John Terry, in his own way, deserves a great send off," Moyes told The Northern Echo's Scott Wilson. "He got that today.
"We knew it was coming, and we agreed to put the ball out. It was Diego Costa that actually asked Jordan to kick the ball out. We actually did it about 15 seconds too early, but we knew it was happening."
Sunderland finish bottom of the Premier League with 24 points from 38 games and endured their 26th defeat of the season on Sunday afternoon.
Moyes will be tasked with rebuilding the team as they prepare for next season's Championship campaign.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were presented with the Premier League trophy after today's victory. Michy Batshuayi scored twice, while Pedro, Eden Hazard and Willian all grabbed a goal each during Sunday's victory.
Antonio Conte's side will now face Arsenal in the final of the FA Cup as they look to secure a double during the Italian's maiden season in England.
