Cunningham takes over as Dublin manager

Dublin hurlers have appointed Ger Cunningham as their new manager.

The former Cork goalkeeper, winner of three All-Ireland medals and four All-Stars in a senior career spanning 18 years, has been given a three-year term.

In other news, the All-Star nominations for the 2014 season have been unveiled.

Unsurprisingly, champions Kilkenny lead the way with 13 players shortlisted, while runners-up Tipperary have 11.

Limerick have seven hurlers on the list, Cork have six, while Wexford and Dublin have three and two respectively. Clare, Offaly and Galway have one apiece.

Richie Hogan, Seamus Callinan and TJ Reid have been nominated for the player of the year prize, and Cathal Barrett, Shane Dowling and Conor McDonald are shortlisted for the young-player prize.

Meanwhile in Cork, Jimmy Barry Murphy has agreed to stay on for a further two years as the Rebels’ manager.

Former Galway All-Star and Sky Sports analyst Ollie Canning spoke to us about this year’s All-Star nominations and the appointment of Cunningham by the Dubs. You can hear his take here:
