Chris Eubank Jr captured the IBO super-middleweight title last night with a 10th round stoppage over reigning champion Renold Quinlan.
It was his 24th victory from 25 fights, in which the 27-year-old began to assert his dominance in the third round at the London Olympia.
Moving Quinlan onto the ropes, Eubank worked up some nice combination play to wear his opponent down.
A few well placed jabs lined him up to deliver a punishing hook that landed on Quinlan's temple. He followed that up with a left upper-cut before the bell.
Eubank continued advancing on the Australian in the fourth round and appeared to hurt Quinlan with a left-hook. And with his confidence noticeably growing, the British fighter seemed to be taunting the champion in the ring.
From about the seventh round, Quinlan's challenge was all but nullified but he maintained his resilience. Eubank continued chipping away at the resistance in the eight and ninth rounds, striking without much opposition.
By the 10th round, the referee decided that Quinlan had absorbed enough punishment and rightly intervened to stop the fight.
On the surface, it appeared to be a one-sided bout, but Eubank remarked after the fight that wearing Quinlan down was a difficult assignment.
"His skull was very hard - it was like hitting concrete. Now I am a world champion, I have my ticket to challenge the rest of the super middleweights."
Eubank named James DeGale, Billy Joe Saunders and Gennady Golovkin, as potential fighters for his next bout.
