Stephen Kenny's team join Cork City, Bray Wanderers and Drogheda United on six points after the first two games of the 2017 season.
For Sligo however, the heavy defeat is a further blow to manager Dave Robertson.
On the opening weekend, they also fell to a defeat by a four goal margin after Limerick defeated them 5-1 partly down to a Rodrigo Tosi hat-trick.
They are now bottom of the table with a goal difference of minus eight.
In the First Division, Cobh Ramblers earned a 3-1 win at Longford Town.
