"Brain fart" spoils Shane Lowry's finish at the BMW PGA Championship

Shane Lowry recorded his best result of 2017 on Sunday afternoon, but could have been better only for a "brain fart".

The Offaly golfer finished in a tie for sixth at the BMW PGA Championship, four shots behind the winner Alex Noren. Lowry shot a final round of 69, despite two double-bogeys on the back nine.

Lowry birdied five of his opening seven holes in Sunday's final round, to join Noren in a tie for the lead. Despite the quick start, the former Irish Open winner failed to birdie any of the next seven holes.

Two double-bogeys and an eagle in the final four holes, saw the 30-year-old seal his first top-ten spot of the season. The €187,550 earned was also his best payday of the season.

"We got a bit of rain 13, 14, 15 kind of didn't help our cause and I just hit a bad tee shot on 15", Lowry revealed after the round. "Bit of a mental - a bit of a brain fart on 17. Well, yeah, it was nice to eagle the last. If I'd walked away finishing 10th or 11th here, I would have been very disappointed."

"It's a decent week, a few World Ranking points, a few Race to Dubai points. I've got to build on it. It's my best week in a while. I started like a train today, and my putter felt fantastic all day. I mean, I burnt the edges even when they weren't going in. Yeah, a lot of positives I suppose."

Lowry has struggled with putting in recent months, but he was delighted with his form on the greens of Wentworth. He did admit though that the improvement in form on the greens affected his driving.

"I've been battling for months to try to get my putting right, and then get my putting right and my driving goes a little bit. So that's what this game does."

Lowry travels to America this week, where he competes in The Memorial ahead of next month's US Open.
