Arsene Wenger explains decision to start Ospina ahead of Cech

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed David Ospina will start in Wednesday night's UEFA Champions League tie against Bayern Munich.

Ospina has started in goal for Arsenal's six Champions League group ties so far this season, with established No 1 Petr Cech always starting in the Premier League when fit.

Given the importance of the Champions League tie, the decision to start No 2 Ospina ahead of the 2012 Champions League winner Cech will raise eyebrows.

Speaking of his decision, Wenger said: “It will be Ospina because of the quality of his performances and if you are today in the last 16, we finished top of the group.

“If you analyse well his performances in every single game, we are where we are basically down to his great performances.”

Wenger's goalkeeper rotation policy dates back to last season.

Ospina, who signed for Arsenal in 2014 one year before Cech, was the Champions League first choice in 2015-16, although he was replaced by No 1 Cech after two group fixtures due to injury.

He then started the last 16 second leg against Barcelona. Cech had started the first leg and the final four group fixtures.

More often than not, Ospina has been the starting goalkeeper in the domestic cup competitions with Cech rested for those fixtures.
