Idrissa Gueye leaves the Premier League for Paris Saint-Germain

Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye has left Everton to join Paris Saint-Germain on a three-year contract.

The 29-year-old has joined the French champions for a fee believed to be around €32 million (£29 million) - six months after Everton rejected a €23 million (£21.5 million) bid from PSG.

Gueye signed for the Merseysiders in 2016 from Aston Villa. who had just been relegated from the Premier League. He made 99 league appearances for the Toffees in the past three years scoring three goals.

The Senegalese midfielder was part of the national team that got to the final of the African Cup of Nations in Egypt earlier this month. They lost in the decider to Algeria. However, Gueye grabbed a goal in the competition, scoring the only goal in Senegal's quarter-final win against Benin.

Speaking after joining, Gueye said, "I’m immensely proud to sign for Paris Saint-Germain. After focussing on the AFCON with Senegal, I wanted to give a new boost to my club career by joining Paris Saint-Germain, one of the most structured and ambitious sports projects in Europe.

"I’d like to thank the directors, the coach and his staff for the confidence they have shown in me. I will do everything to justify the faith they have shown in me and to integrate into this talented squad. And of course, I can’t wait to take in the amazing atmosphere of the Parc des Princes, which impressed me during my first seasons in France!”

He joins a midfield at Paris Saint-Germain that requires cover after the departures of Lassana Diarra and Adrien Rabiot. The squad, however, has been bolstered by the addition of Ander Herrera. He joined the Parisians on a five-year-deal after his contract expired at Manchester United.

Herrera said he was joining the "greatest club in France" when he signed the contract.

Paris Saint-Germain start their defence of the French league title at home to Nimes on August 11th.
