Shane O'Brien to be Westmeath's new hurling manager

Westmeath are set to appoint Shane O'Brien as their new senior hurling manager as they prepare to play Division One hurling for the first time in 30 years.

The Dubliner was part of Joe Quaid's backroom team last season as the Lake County secured the Division Two A League title and reached the Joe McDonagh Cup final.

O'Brien had also worked under Quaid in Kildare where they won the Christy Ring Cup and he's held management roles with the Dublin camogie team and Trinity College, Dublin.

He'll be forward for ratification at the next meeting of Westmeath's County Board and their chairman Billy Foley has urged clubs to rubber-stamp the appointment.

"I believe we have found a super candidate in Shane but the decision will ultimately be made by the clubs at next week's county board meeting.

"I would like to thank the members of the selection committee for there hard work over the past number of weeks at coming to this point."

O'Brien is set to attend the Westmeath hurling semi-finals later this month.

Former Galway dual player Alan Kerins joins in a coaching and performance role while Paudie O'Neill has been appointed as the Lake County's director of coaching.

Westmeath legend Brendan Murtagh has been retained as a selector in the new management team.
