Father figure | Cork star Shane Kingston on having his dad as manager

Cork hurler Shane Kingston says he doesn't find it too strange to be quarantining with his Dad - who just happens to be the Rebels' senior manager.

Kieran Kingston was installed at the helm last October for a second spell in charge, having previously managed the inter-county team from 2015 to 2017, guiding them to a Munster title in his final year.

His son Shane was recently named the Electric Ireland Higher Education Rising Star Hurling Player of the Year, and was also a member of the 2019 Rising Star Team of the Year.

He scored four points in the final to help UCC retain the Fitzgibbon Cup, a competition Kingston knows well. Shane told Eoin Sheahan on OTB AM that that he doesn't find the father/son/manager/player dynamic is a problem.

"It's grand, not too bad to be fair. I'm training away myself, he knows I'm doing it. He's probably hoping everybody else is training away as well! Everyone's in the same boat really.

"He kind of stays away from me a bit and leaves that to the other management people, it's probably best!

"It's not different really, the only difference is when I go home he's still there, but I had it growing up as well with the club when I was younger. I'm used to it from 2016 and 2017!"

The 23-year-old Douglas clubman added that no matter who is in the dugout the effort and determination on the pitch remains the same for him.

"Everytime you go out you're trying to get the best out of yourself and play as best you can regardless who the manager is. Whether it's club or county you're going out representing the people that are there to support you.

"It doesn't really matter who is on the line shouting at you, not that you can hear him anyway!

"He's obsessed with GAA so he's always talking about it. One of the other members of management would approach me as opposed to having my old man do it, just to keep things professional really."
