Leitrim hurling manager resigns claiming he was "ambushed" at meeting

Leitrim's hurling manager has resigned after claiming he was "ambushed" at a meeting with players voicing their discontent at his leadership.

Martin Cunniffe had been in charge of the Ridge County since 2011 and led them to Lory Meagher glory in 2019. However, he let the county board know he was standing aside on Monday morning.

Speaking to Ocean FM, Cunniffe said, "a member from Cluainín Iomáint hurling club which is Manorhamiliton, he said that he was sent to the meeting with a message, that eight members of the county hurling panel would not be playing county hurling unless there was a change in management.

"That has since been confirmed by one player, who said it was me they were targeting. I realised as well that some of those players didn't know the meeting was taking place."

"We had the best year we could ever have. I was just ambushed at this meeting. That's the word I can use, ambushed. No more, no less.

Then, on Monday the 28th of October, Carrick hurling was playing in the Connacht club down in Sligo and a member of the hurling committee indicated to my daughter that some Carrick players had a problem with me and that I should leave and give someone else a chance.

"That is the major problem I have, the way they went about it. If some of them came to me and said they wanted a job or they were interested I'd have no problem.
