GAA's 2021 season likely to see inter-county games played before club

Major calendar changes look to be on the way for the GAA season next year.

County chairpersons held a conference call today, and the majority are in favour of the inter-county season being played before the club season next year.

This would mean the Allianz National Leagues and All-Ireland's would likely run from late February to mid-July.

It's expected the All-Ireland Senior Hurling and Football finals would be played on the 11th and 18th July respectively.

Attention could then immediately turn to the club game which would run into the winter.

However, doing this next year could have major financial implications as it is not yet known when fans will be back in stadiums with the Guinness Six Nations in February the most likely point of return.

GAA Director General Tom Ryan warned those on the call today of the possible consequences of shifting the calendar next year.

The organisation recorded losses of €35 million in 2020 and another year in the red could have catastrophic consequences.

If this split season does come about with the inter-county game before club next year, major cost-cutting measures may be needed by counties, with funding unlikely to snap back to pre-pandemic levels.

The decision will be made at Central Council on Friday 18th December when delegates will decide between the two 2021 calendar options - county first or club first - as put together by the Central Competitions Control Committee.
