Eir Sport to cease transmission by the end of the year

Eir Sport has confirmed its channels will be taken off air later this year.

The news was conveyed to their staff on Tuesday.

The former Setanta Sports channels were rebranded when they were purchased by telecommunications company Eir in 2015.

Across its network, Eir Sports has provided coverage of the Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues, the Guinness PRO14 and in 2019, the Rugby World Cup in Japan.

In March it was confirmed that Eir Sport would no longer be bidding for sports rights having suffered a severe drop in revenue.

TV and content revenue at the company fell 47% in 2020 due to the effects of the pandemic.

At the time, a spokesperson said, "The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on live sports across the world.

"Matches and competitions have been canceled or postponed throughout the last year, disrupting the availability of live sports content.

"In addition, the almost complete closure of licensed premises here in Ireland has fundamentally changed the commercial model for subscription-based sports broadcasters."

In a statement to The 42 on Wednesday, Eir confirmed the decision to cease transmission “following an in-depth review”.

The added, "“The challenges of the last year have fundamentally changed the commercial model for sports broadcasters, with more sporting events moving to free-to-air and premium broadcasting rights becoming increasingly expensive.

"We are refocusing our resources on our core business of providing the best mobile and broadband networks and services for our customers."

Eir Sport will continue to broadcast this year's Allianz Leagues and its remaining Rainbow Cup commitments, before bringing the shutters down before the end of 2021.
