Darren Gleeson is the new Antrim hurling manager

Former Tipperary goalkeeper Darren Gleeson has been appointed the new Antrim senior hurling manager.

The two-time All Ireland winner with the Premier County has been handed a three-year term with the Saffrons after being ratified at Monday night's County Committee meeting.

Last year's manager Neal Peden moves up to the new role of Antrim Director of Hurling.

Gleeson was part of the Antrim coaching team over the past two seasons. Following Antrim's Joe McDonagh Cup campaign, the 38-year old linked up with Liam Sheedy's Tipperary backroom team helping them to this year's All Ireland hurling title.

He was originally introduced to the Antrim set-up via Sheedy, who was assisting Dominic McKinley and Terence McNaughton at the time. It's believed Gleeson has made a huge impression on the Antrim panel during his time with them so far.

Antrim GAA say Gleeson "brings a wealth of knowledge" given his time as a player with Tipp from his debut in 2008 to his retirement in 2017.

A lacklustre Allianz Hurling League campaign saw Antrim finish third in Division 2A, with defeats to Westmeath and Kerry costing them potential promotion.

The highlight of their year was June's 3-23 to 4-18 win over Offaly - one of two wins in the Joe McDonagh Cup, with the other coming against Kerry in the opening round.

Gleeson will appoint his backroom team in the coming weeks. He's expected to attend the Antrim county championship semi-finals between St. John's and Cushendall on September 14, and the following day's match-up of Dunloy and Loughgiel.
