Why Cyril Farrell isn't shocked by Galway's 2019 setback

Cyril Farrell wasn't shocked by Galway's exit from the 2019 All-Ireland hurling championship.

The former senior manager joined us in the wake of the weekend's defeat to Dublin.

That loss sealed the 2017 All-Ireland winners' exit from the Championship.

Farrell wasn't shocked that Galway came a cropper against the Dubs.

"It wasn't a shock because Dublin have been playing well all year," he said.

"Mattie Kenny would have a good few back that weren't there last year. And Galway while they did beat Kilkenny, weren't really flying all this year.

"So it wouldn't be a shock. They'd be hot favourites, but going up to Parnell Park is a hard place to win."

Out-Hurled

And so it proved as Micheal Donoghue's side lost. But Farrell feels the root of Galway's problems date back to last year, with the signs there against Limerick.

"We were only beaten by a point [in the final]. But if you looked at the full 70 minutes, I think we were out-hurled for a lot of it," he said.

"I really do think what they have to do is get back and get a few younger fellas onto the panel, good enough to make the team and bring a new enthusiasm and bit of energy into their game."

Farrell also believes manager Micheal Donoghue is under no pressure.

"There'll be no-one looking for him to go. It's really up to himself and it'll be his own decision. And I know the players would be quite happy with him," he said.

But the question of whether Galway are over-reliant on Joe Canning has reared its again.

"That'll be there until they win an All-Ireland without him because he's such a good player," said Farrell.

"He'd get on any county team and he is a great player. Joe will still be around but it'll be thrown at them until they win without him."
