Billy Quinn, All-Ireland hurling winner and father of Niall, has passed away

Tipperary All-Ireland minor hurling winner, Billy Quinn, has passed away. He is the father of former Irish international footballer Niall Quinn.

Tipperary GAA released a statement today stating their sadness and regret following the death of their former hurler and footballer.

The Tipperary man had a distinguished under-age hurling career and captained his native Tipperary to an All-Ireland minor hurling title by defeating Dublin in the final of 52 before repeating the feat in 1953 by defeating Dublin, again, in the final.

He would go on to win a National Hurling League title with the senior Tipperary hurlers and won a host of club competitions with his home town club of Rahealty.

On hearing of the passing of Billy Quinn, Tipperary Co. Board Chairman Michael Bourke paid this tribute; “Men of the quality and calibre of Billy Quinn are unique in the GAA and his arrival on the Tipperary hurling scene at such a young age speaks volumes of his ability. Had government employment policy been different at the time I have no doubt that Billy would have had many Senior All-Ireland medals in his possession along with his two All-Ireland Minor medals. On behalf of Tipperary County Board we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Mary, sons and daughters Rosaleen, Gerry, Anne Marie and Niall and the extended Quinn family on the sad passing of their beloved Billy”.
