'Haaland would get 40 a season at City' | David Meyler

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder David Meyler joined OTB AM to preview a massive night in the UEFA Champions League.

With Man City facing off against Borussia Dortmund, there has been plenty of talk and speculation around the future of the Norwegian superstar Erling Haaland.

City are the current favourites to land the 20-year-old's signature and Meyler gave his thoughts on the prospect of Haaland joining an already spectacular team.

"Can you imagine Haaland in a Man City team? He would probably get the bones of 40 goals a season," Meyler said.

Meyler was asked if City and Pep Guardiola would need to change their style of play to accommodate Haaland and utilise his strengths.

"I don’t think they would have to shift too much, City would still play by dominating possession," he explained.

"Other than Robert Lewandowski though, Pep has always gone for  small, nimble and quick forwards. Haaland is very quick but he doesn’t have the passing ability of an Aguero.

"Haaland just wants to score goals and his record is off the charts.

"Pep will coach though and that’s what the best do. There’s no doubt that if Haaland signed, Pep would make him touch up on his all round game and tweak a few things to make him an even better player."

Tuesday's Champions League game may almost be like a trial for Haaland, according to Meyler.

"I think tonight is a bit of a trial for Haaland because if he puts in a performance against Man City then the people who are running City might say, 'we’re just going to go and get him'," Meyler explained.

"There is obviously that problem between Guardiola and Mino Raiola and whether or not they’ll be able to work together, I don’t know.

"Certainly though now that Aguero is gone, I think Haaland fits the bill but whether or not they will go for him, I don’t know."

Manchester City vs Borussia Dortmund kicks off at 8pm on Tuesday evening.
