It was a clean sweep for the Irish fighters at last night’s UFC event in The O2, Dublin. The wins have raised the profile of Conor McGregor and his stable mates from Straight Blast Gym – not to mention seriously bolstered the credentials of coach John Kavanagh – but the real star beyond these shores seems to have been the atmosphere inside the arena last night.
After the fight UFC President Dana White announced that a sound level of 111 decibels had been reached in the arena when Conor McGregor won with a first round TKO. When the subject of the atmosphere came up at the post fight press conference White told reporters he had heard some people suggest to him that the atmosphere in Dublin wasn’t quite the peak of UFC nights:
“They were like, yeah but Seattle has 135 decibels? And I was like, yeah and Seattle has sixty thousand more people. Ireland wins!
“It’s crazy man. It’s amazing, it’s fun...on TV people were going crazy, being here live it was crazy.”
A host of UFC commentators were in attendance last night and took to Twitter during the event to comment on the building energy inside the O2, which peaked at 111 decibels (slightly above what you’d expect from a rock concert) from a crowd of just 9,500 people.
Holy shit the crowd went off. They are literally all throwing their beers up in the air and all over each other and the cage in celebration

I've just spoke to person who held decibel counter. It hit 111 decibels when @TheNotoriousMMA Conor McGregor finished the fight. @ufc

In the arena right now you literally can't hear the ring announcer. Dude might as well be underwater. Crowd drowned him out completely
— JJ (@johnjoeoregan) July 19, 2014
You have never heard a crowd as loud as what is about to happen right now when Conor McGregor walks in.
— JJ (@johnjoeoregan) July 19, 2014
Before whatever is about to happen here happens, let's give Brandao props for having the balls to step into this lion's den.

If I wasn't here on behalf of @sherdog I would right now be drunk, naked, painted green & hanging off the giant screen screaming incoherently
— JJ (@johnjoeoregan) July 19, 2014
I have never ever heard an arena go off like it just did for cathal pendred's escape from mount @pendredmma. That was intense.
— JJ (@johnjoeoregan) July 19, 2014
The ufc should fly this crowd to every event. Pay it's airfare, feed it beer, it will reward you in noise. @ufc @danawhite
— JJ (@johnjoeoregan) July 19, 2014
UFC should probably just move the headquarters to Dublin.

Could you imagine what McGregor is thinking watching this crowd in the back?
— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2014
Way louder than any US crowd. UFC 134-esque RT @NC3TheTruth: @arielhelwani How loud is it in there? Comparable to anywhere in the states
— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2014
Conor comes out to a Sinead/Biggie remix. I don't think I've ever heard a crowd like this. Incredible stuff. They are dancing in the stands.
— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2014
Dana says it got to 111 decibels in the arena.
— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2014
Mcgregor wins via 1st round TKO. Pandemonium. Crazier than nog in brazil. Drinks flying. What a moment for him and these people.
— Ariel Helwani (@arielhelwani) July 19, 2014
Dana said Brazil had "the loudest crowd ever" in 2011. Sweden had "loudest & most educated crowd" in 2012. Now, called Ireland "P4P loudest"
— Guilherme Cruz (@guicruzzz) July 19, 2014
Probably couldn’t script that any better if you’re the UFC. McGregor’s star grows even bigger. He’ll be a draw everywhere. Not just Ireland.

Also...was #UFCDublin the best @ufc card, top to bottom, ever??? The fights, the speeches, the emotions, the crowd?? Hard to beat. @UFC_UK

Another superlative submission win (RNC) for the unbeaten @GunniNelson He salutes the crowd as the "best ever." #DublinDecibelLevel
