It is the second design for the stadium, since the Japanese city won the bid to host the games in 2013. The original design was scrapped due to its futuristic design and spiralling costs.
The stadium has been designed by Kengo Kuma and is expected to cost over a billion euros. Japanese cedar wood will be used throughout the building, which may add to maintenance costs.
Japan's Prime Minister Abe Shinzo released more pictures of what the stadium is expected to look like from inside the 80,000 seated arena.
