R&A distances itself from Trump with Turnberry out of their plans

The R&A have intimated that they will not return to Turnberry until its no longer in the hands of Donald Trump.

The US President has owned the Ayrshire golf course since 2014.

The R&A have followed the lead of the PGA of America in distancing themselves from the man who inspired an armed insurrection of the US Capitol that resulted in five deaths.

On Monday it was confirmed that the 2022 PGA Championship would no longer be held at the Trump-owned Trump Bedminster in New Jersey.

The PGA of America saying staging the tournament at the New Jersey course would be "detrimental to the PGA of America brand".

While the R&A say Turnberry wasn't in their immediate plans, the course would be avoided by them until its ownership becomes less of an issue.

Chief Executive Martin Slumbers said, "We had no plans to stage any of our championships at Turnberry and will not do so in the foreseeable future.

"We will not return until we are convinced that the focus will be on the championship, the players and the course itself and we do not believe that is achievable in the current circumstances.”
