Power secures Masters place with progress in WGC Match Play

Seamus Power will be among the field for the Masters for the first time in his career.

The Waterford golfer's progress to the last-16 of the WGC Match Play in Austin means he's guaranteed to hold on to his crucial top-50 placing in the world rankings ahead of Monday's crucial cut-off date.

Power lost his final Group 4 match 2&1 to Keith Mitchell, but secured top billing in the group by virtue of Patrick Cantlay's 2&1 win over Sungjae Im.

The 35-year old will play England's Tyrell Hatton in the last-16 on Saturday morning.

A place at Augusta caps a remarkable rise for Power, who ended 2020 in 429th place in the world. But last year's Barbasol Championship win - in tandem with five top-10 finishes - flung him upwards to the top 100 in the world.

Things have steadily improved since, and he crept into the world's top-50 in January after tying for third at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

He'll now become just the sixteenth Irish golfer to tee up at Augusta.
