Peyton Manning's future in the NFL in doubt

Peyton Manning's status in the NFL Hall of Fame is not in doubt. He has played for 17 years at the highest level, accumulating 71,871 yards, 539 touchdowns and a 96.5 QB rating in that time. His future in the game, however, depends heavily on a workout today at the Denver Broncos practice facility.

Reports on NFL.com suggest that a workout scheduled for today will determine whether Manning will be considered if, and most likely when, the Broncos make the play-offs. If he doesn't pass the test, it could spell the end for Manning in Denver and beyond.

He is currently recovering from a partially torn plantar fascia in his left foot and has been replaced for the last five games by Brock Osweiler. He has been ruled out for this weekend's showdown with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night and the future remains ominous for the gun-slinger.

The truth is that if Manning does not recover and is cut by the Broncos, there are few teams who will be willing to take a chance on a 39 year old quarterback coming off a significant injury. On the other side of the coin, it is unlikely that Manning would be willing to take a pay cut in order to sit on the bench behind a team's starting quarterback.

Manning has always been good at marketing himself and will have a future in broadcasting once he hangs up his cleats so this might also entice the former Colts quarterback into retirement. If the results from his workout on Saturday are not good, the decision might be made for him.
