McIlroy: Major drought doesn't keep me awake at night

Rory McIlroy says he goes into this week's PGA Championship unburdened by a six-year gap between Majors.

The world no.3 last taste of Major success saw him lifting the Wanamaker Trophy at Valhalla in 2014.

At the time that was McIlroy's second Major victory inside a month, and it seemed as if it would become habitual.

However, the big-4 have come and gone each year without the County Down golfer adding to his tally of four.

While he insists the six-year drought "does not keep me awake at night", McIlroy knows ten top-10 finishes doesn't quite cut it.

"I would have liked to have won a couple more majors in that time frame," he said prior to his opening round at Harding Park, "And I feel like I've had a couple of decent chances to do so and I just haven't got the job done.

"But the good thing is we have at least three opportunities this year, and then hopefully if things normalise going forward, four opportunities.

"So we're playing seven major championships in the next 12 months basically. I've got plenty of opportunities coming my way."

McIlroy's recent form doesn't instil confidence that he can bridge that gap.

He's not registered a top-10 finish in any of the five PGA Tour events he's played since golf's resumption.

His best finish was a tie for 11th at the Travelers' Championship.

"Before the world sort of shut down, I was playing some really good golf," McIlroy told Wednesday's news conference.

"And then having that three-month break, everything sort of changed. Everything feels different, in the competitive arena, anyway.

"But my game doesn’t feel that far away. I feel like I’ve played pretty well. … I haven’t been as efficient as I was back then. My short game hasn’t quite been as sharp."

McIlroy will play alongside world no.1 Justin Thomas and Tiger Woods in his opening two rounds at Harding Park.
